CHICAGO ARTIST WRITERS
Chicago Artist Writers (Sofia Leiby and Jason Lazarus) in collaboration with artist Brandon Alvendia present an art writing workshop that instigates a collectively authored review of an exhibition on view in the immediate surroundings to be published at the conclusion of the workshop. Bio: Chicago Artist Writers is a platform that asks artists and art workers to write traditional and experimental criticism that serves non-profit, temporary, and alternative arts programming in Chicago. Brandon Alvendia is a Chicago-based conceptual artist, curator, writer, publisher and educator. His interdisciplinary practice playfully engages spatial and social architectures to envision temporary utopias.
PEER REVIEW is a 90-minute group writing exercise designed to capture and formalize the critical discussions that occur during the informal and organic shared experience of viewing and evaluating art.
Visitors to the workshop will be given the challenge to collectively author a cohesive piece of art criticism to be published online under a shared nom de plume.
This arrangement falls in the literary tradition of the multiple-use name such as The Luther Blissett Project, Karen Eliot and The Wu Ming Foundation as much as it does in the all-inclusive, crowd-sourced online reviewing on platforms such as Amazon, Yelp, Google, etc. Likewise, in the mass-media context (marketing, screenwriting, celebrity memoirs, Presidential speechwriting, etc.), writing duties are shared under the auspice of a centralized brand or figurehead.
The approach sets aside assumptions about authority, pedigree, credibility, conflict-of-interest, responsibility and certainty to consider the implications of those assumptions in creating knowledge and judgment.
The workshop begins with a brief orientation lecture, during which tasks, expectations and clipboards will be assigned to visitors as well as a reading of historical precedents. From there, the group will travel together, pens and smartphones in hand, to tour the exhibition on view at Paris London Hong Kong (an anonymously curated private art gallery). Upon return, all notes and observations will be collected, shared and edited into a coherent argument about the show. The goal at the end of the night will to upload the review to the CAW website under the yet-to-be-determined pen name.
Refreshments and other goodies will be offered as compensation for participation in the project.
