(Miami, FL, December 1, 2007) At the invitation of Claire
Breukel, George Sanchez-Calderon and Kerry Phillips have been
invited and accepted the opportunity to create one of the
most dynamic works of internationally recognized commissionable
high-priced works of art in recent history (Damien Hirst,
Richard Serra, Anselm Kiefer, and Romero Britto excluded).
After having met and patronized each other over coffee, George
and Kerry realized they would both do what they wanted to
while not getting in each other’s way, hence the title
of the installation. While it is a collaborative work, it
is also two people staying out of each other’s way.
Simply put it is a conversation amongst two new friends, making
art, and enjoying their lives to the fullest. We hope you
feel the same way.
Sincerely,
G & K
Biographies
Kerry Phillips refers to her work as documentary fiction—favoring
any/every material and process to explore our ever-changing
memories and perceptions. It is the inconstant nature of our
remembrances, which cause our understood "realities"
to likewise continuously shift and alter. Originally from
Texas (as she'll be more than happy to tell you) she received
a BFA from Florida International University in 2000 and an
MFA in 2003 from the University of Arizona.
George Sánchez-Calderón first exhibited at
the Franklin Furnace Archive in New York in 1996 and has subsequently
been exhibiting large-scale interventions throughout South
Florida. Mr. Sanchez-Calderon’s work has been described
as “context-driven public installations and architectural
re-interpretations that confront the viewer due to their social
involvement.” In 2001 Mr. Sanchez-Calderon re-created
in eighty percent scale a reproduction of Le Corbusier’s
“Villa Savoye” under the I-395 freeway in Overtown
and most recently is participating in the 40th anniversary
of Public Art in NY.
He received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design
in 1995. He is also the recipient of the Oscar B. Cintas Fellowship
and the South Florida Cultural Consortium Award. His work
is in the collection of the Miami Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary
Art in North Miami, Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz and etc...
