(Miami, March 2008)
Locust Projects announces its partnership with the newly formed Fountainhead Residency program initiated by Miami collectors Dan and Kathryn Mikesell. The Residency offers Locust’s flights for visiting artists and gives Locust the use of a three-bedroom house to accommodate the artists for up to three months. Also open to outside submissions, the residency aims to invite curators and artists from around the world to experience Miami and create artwork, artist and curator talks and exhibitions during their stay. A call to artists and curators invites them to submit proposals, which will be selected by a committee comprised of Miami Art professionals. The Fountainhead Residency began with the exhibition Synesthetics opening at Locust Projects on March 8 and which closes April 28, 2008.
Locust Projects is partnering with the Fountainhead Residency Program, which aims to provide artists with an environment to find new inspirations, create new work and provide a memorable experience by funding artists to travel to Miami and provide a creative living and working space. Benefactors Dan and Kathryn Mikesell are hosting the program that will provide artists the opportunity to meet and receive feedback from some of the most respected curators, collectors, gallerists in Miami, while being afforded housing and flights to further their own unique artistic processes. Mr. and Mrs. Mikesell are passionate contemporary art collectors, who seek to go beyond the role of art collection and desire to be more intimately integrated in the world of artists and their art. “While our acquisitions help artists financially, in establishing this residency we are seeking to assist artists in providing them with a fountainhead that can be found only in Miami and its artistic energies” states the Mikesells.
The Residency is located in a pristine 1950s Miami Modern home in the downtown historic neighborhood of Morningside in Miami, Florida, a stones throw from both the Miami Design District and Wynwood Art District where Locust Projects is located. The Residency was inaugurated with a stay of Synesthetics exhibition participants. Synesthetics opened at Locust Projects on March 8, 2008 and consisted of a group exhibition of 3 visiting artists and 5 crew members, something Locust could not have facilitated in the past. “This partnership has allowed Locust to greatly expand our programming potential. With the support of the Fountainhead Residency we aim to reach out to other organizations, curators and artists to garner a more dynamic community dialogue” says Locust Director Claire Breukel.
