Matthew Brannon

Known for working in the space between disciplinary fields, Matthew Brannon, whose signature "knife" image began the mural project in 2005, likes to tangle up painting and decor, printmaking and advertising, graphic design and murals, remixing things in the process until they edge the indeterminacy. Always negotiating with the demands of the functional, Brannon is always after that place where deadpan wit meets rigorous ambiguity, where the concerns of post-conceptual art meet the demands of the dandy.

Matthew Brannon is a New York City based artist whose work explores the “unresolvable tension between decoration, design, and fine art.” He has had solo exhibitions internationally and was notably included in “Greater New York 2005” at P.S.1 Center for Contemporary art. His work has been featured in ARTFORUM and in Art in America among other publications. He is represented in New York by Frederic Petzel and has exhibited in Miami with Kevin Bruk Gallery. His work often depicts an intersection of imagery and ideas culled from modern and vintage graphic design – recalling movie poster advertisements and other mainstream media references. His aesthetic lends to both the elegantly Baroque and macabre, in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, with word play an often essential element. A graduate of Columbia University MFA program, Brannon is a rising star in the international contemporary art scene. His work was recently featured in a solo showing in the Statements section of Art Basel, Switzerland 2006, as well as the 2006 Whitney Biennial.
